NX Chamfer and Edge Blend: Common Mistakes and Fixes

Aggregated practitioner guidance on the two features that generate the most "why did this fail" support questions in solid feature modeling: Chamfer and Edge Blend.

The classic failure mode: mismatched tapers at a corner

When different tapers or blend radii meet at a corner (a common case: a hole and an adjacent slot with different edge treatments), NX can generate odd extra faces in the corner region that the geometry engine struggles to resolve cleanly. This is the single most common cause of "chamfer/blend failed" errors reported by practitioners on complex prismatic parts.

Workaround used by practitioners: create a Face Blend instead of a solid-body chamfer/edge-blend, trimming only the blend faces without sewing or attaching them to the rest of the body. This produces just the blend surface, which can then be manually stitched in — giving you manual control over the problematic corner instead of relying on the automatic solver.

Editing non-parametric (imported/history-stripped) bodies

For bodies that no longer carry feature history (imported geometry, or bodies that had "Remove Parameters" applied), NX provides tools that let you edit faces so they behave like chamfers or rolling-ball blends even without the original feature:

  • Label Chamfer (available since NX 7.5)
  • Optimize Face
  • Resize Blend

These are the go-to tools when you receive a dumb/imported body and need to tweak a chamfer or blend size without a feature to edit directly.

General modeling guidance

For prismatic shapes, practitioners recommend modeling with solid bodies and extrusions rather than sheet bodies before applying chamfer/edge-blend features — chamfer and blend behave more predictably against solid geometry than against open sheet bodies, where face adjacency and thickness assumptions can produce unexpected results.
