Modular connectors

A modular connector is an electrical device commonly comprised of one or more plugs, receptacles, terminals, or other electrical subcomponents encased in a housing or backshell. It consists of:

  1. Modular parent
  2. Intermediate parent
  3. Subconnectors

Routing Electrical can import and interpret modular connector data received from external ECAD products. The imported data is used to place subcomponents in their proper positions inside the parent module, which you can view in the electrical navigators.

You can view electrical component information, such as the parent and intermediate parent modules, subconnectors, and ports per electrical component, and whether a component is assigned via its association with the parent module's port.

The ModularConnector display format adds two columns in the Electrical Component Navigator specifically for use in interpreting modular connector data. Symbols for a modular connector in the Assigned column indicate that the component was assigned via its association with the parent module's port.

Routing of electrical connections to the parent module's subcomponents occurs through the modular parent's multi port — no other internal paths are required. Gray symbols in the Wire ID column indicate that the connections are not routed directly to their subconnectors, but are instead routed to the parent module's multi port.

Viewing component assignments in status reports

When you open the Electrical Component Navigator status report, the Assigned through parent entry indicates the number of components assigned via their association with a parent module. This number coincides with the number of subcomponents marked MC in the Assigned column.

Example Component Status Report entries include a summary showing total selected connections, routed connections, Auto Routed, Manual Routed, and Routed through parent counts. The Routed through parent number in a Connection Status Report coincides with the number of parent-routing symbols in the Wire ID column.
