Create Terminals

Create Terminals is a Routing Electrical specific operation. It allows you to easily model the ends of wires where they connect to electrical components. However, the modeling of terminal wires is optional as you can route wires to a connector without modeling the individual terminal wires.

Use Create Terminals for modeling and unmodeling the terminals (wires) that connect to terminal ports of a routing component. Create Terminals operates on a set of segments or bundle connected to the multi port of a component. It subdivides the bundle path at a specified cut back distance from the multi port, removes cut back segments and stock, and creates spline path segments to each of the terminal ports.

Create Terminals does not require that wires are routed to the component — the terminal segments are created whether wires are routed or not.

Note: This function operates on one component's terminal ports at a time, according to a wiring preference. Preferences→Wiring→General has the following options for creating terminals: All, Listed, Routed.

Extension Length and Cut Back Length

From the Create Terminals dialog box, you may specify values for the Extension Length and Cut Back Length.

  • The terminal extension length is the distance the terminal wire approaches the terminal port in a straight line.
  • The cut back length is the distance from the multi port along the connecting path where the terminals exit the bundle.

Create Terminals looks for the CUT_BACK_LENGTH characteristic on the multi port first and then on the component associated with the multi port. This value is displayed in the Create Terminals dialog box upon invocation, if found. If the system finds no characteristic value, the multi port is interrogated for a cut back length (defined when the component part was qualified for Routing using Qualify Part).

Create Terminals also attempts to display the terminal extension length when you select terminals in the multilist of the dialog box. To determine the extension length of a terminal, the Create Terminals function looks for the EXTENSION_LENGTH characteristic on the terminal port first, the multi port second, and lastly on the component. If the system finds no characteristic value, Create Terminals looks at the multi port for the value, as provided when the part was qualified.

Manual Port selection

Create Terminals allows you to operate on specific multi ports and select specific terminal ports. Options for selecting terminal ports are:

  • Model Selected
  • Unmodel Selected
  • Model All
  • Unmodel All
  • Right-click→Select Listed
  • Right-click→Select Routed
  • Right-click→Toggle Selection

You may also select or deselect individual terminal ports for the operation.

Automatic Port selection

From the Component Navigator View, you can perform an automatic create terminals operation on all multi ports of the selected components. The system obtains the group of destination terminal ports from user preferences. The options are: All, Listed, Routed.
