NX Tips and Tricks: Chamfer Cage on Subdivision Bodies

Practitioner notes from the official Siemens NX Design blog (author Jimmy Costello, published May 15, 2025) on using the Chamfer Cage command for controlling edge continuity on Realize Shape subdivision bodies.

Continuity control

The Chamfer Cage tool exposes two primary continuity settings that directly answer the "how do I control creases" question that trips up new subdivision modelers:

  • Smooth continuity — creates flowing, natural transitions that blend seamlessly between surfaces. Use this for organic, consumer-product style edges.
  • Sharp continuity — delivers precise, mechanical-style chamfers with clearly defined edges. Use this where a subdivision body needs to read as an engineered/machined part rather than a soft-goods shape.

Toggling between these two settings on the same cage edge is the primary lever practitioners use to move a design from "soft" to "crisp" without re-authoring geometry from scratch.

Multi-edge efficiency

The Chamfer Cage supports selecting and manipulating multiple edges simultaneously, letting a designer apply a consistent chamfer value across a whole model instead of adjusting each edge individually — a meaningful time-saver compared to editing subdivision creases edge-by-edge.

Symmetric modeling integration

When Symmetric Modeling is active, Chamfer Cage edits automatically mirror across the defined symmetry plane. This keeps left/right (or top/bottom) design intent balanced while removing the need to manually replicate edits on the mirrored half of the body — a common source of asymmetry mistakes for beginners who edit only one side.

Practical takeaway

The interactive cage structure gives visual, real-time control over edge treatment while preserving the organic character of the subdivision design — valuable when iterating quickly on complex concept models that will eventually need production-quality surface continuity.
