Understanding Emboss options
The Emboss command has a wide range of options for controlling and managing the shape and orientation of an emboss, its end caps, and sidewalls. To use these options effectively, you need an understanding of the options and how they work in combination.
Basic Terminology
Listed in approximate order of importance:
- Section — The basic shape of the emboss, created from a closed collection of curves, edges, or a sketch, on or off the target, on a plane, or on other faces. The section is usually planar but it can be 3D. You can use Selection Intent to specify the section.
- Faces to Emboss — The surface (or quilt of surfaces) on which the emboss is built. You can use Selection Intent to specify the target.
- End Cap — The terminating surface of the emboss. The parameters used to specify the end cap will be the floor (pocket) or ceiling (pad) of the resulting geometry. Geometry specified for the end cap does not have to be part of the body being modified.
- Sidewalls — The walls of the emboss join the faces to emboss and the end cap surfaces. These surfaces can be either drafted or ruled without draft.
- Draft Option — The option for creating sidewalls, indicating where the section is drafted from or projected to:
- From Embossed Faces
- From End Cap (from the end cap surface)
- From Selected Face
- From Selected Datum (from a datum plane)
- From Section
- None (not drafted from or projected to)
This projection constitutes the "stationary entity" from which the sidewalls are drafted. Three cases illustrate the effect of projection on the sidewalls (A = original section, B = faces to emboss, C = end cap surface):
- Draft Option = None: the location of the section is stationary when determining the drafted sidewalls.
- The section is projected to the end cap surface to define the stationary edge.
- The section is projected to the faces to emboss.
All three cases would produce the same results if ruled sidewalls with no draft were used, and the projection vector was the same as the sidewall draft direction.
