Choosing a primitive shape

Use the Primitive Shape command to create the type of body you want to use as a starting point for NX Realize Shape modeling.

Choose one of six primitives that best matches the topology and edge continuity of the desired subdivision model.

Examples:

Sphere

Cylinder

Block

Circle

Rectangle

Torus

Design intent and downstream processes should also be taken into consideration:

  • Rounded edges in multiple directions? → Consider the Sphere primitive.

  • Rounded edges in two directions? → Consider the Cylinder primitive.

  • Few rounded edges? → Consider the Block primitive.

  • Need sheet faces? A trimming sheet? → Consider the Circle or Rectangle primitives.

Note: It is not critical to start with the most efficient primitive. NX Realize Shape is flexible enough to let you sharpen the cage edges of a sphere, or round the cage edges of a block, but knowing design intent will inform your choice of primitives and save you modeling time.
