Deformable Parts in NX Assemblies: When and Why

A technique that sits at the intersection of feature design and assembly modeling: components whose shape legitimately needs to change based on their position/context in an assembly, without maintaining a separate part file per configuration.

What Define Deformable Part does

The Define Deformable Part function lets you select which parameters and/or features of a part are allowed to change in the context of a specific assembly. Typical real-world candidates:

  • Springs (length changes with load/compression state)
  • Hose clamps
  • Hoses/flexible tubing

These are components that "change shape at their point of use," and the underlying part file needs to be able to take on a range of shapes depending on where and how it's used in different assemblies or different positions within the same assembly.

Practical implication for feature design

This is functionally an assembly-level escape hatch from the "one part, one parametric recipe" assumption baked into ordinary parametric modeling: instead of building N separate part files for N spring lengths, you author one deformable part and let assembly context drive which of its expressions/features are active. This keeps the feature tree of the underlying part reusable across many assembly contexts instead of forking it per use case.
