Cable diameter value used in bundle diameter calculation

Cable or shield diameter can be explicitly specified by:

  • Entering a value in the OD column for the cable record in the Connection List; or,
  • Listing an OD value for the cable entry in the part table (if the cable is selected from an electrical part table).

An explicitly specified cable or shield OD is used in bundle diameter computation if either of the following holds true:

  • The cable or shield is routed by itself.

    Note: Given sufficient information, a cable or shield record in the Connection List can be routed like any other wire.

  • If all routed children of the cable are on a given path.

If cable OD is not explicitly specified, the diameter of the cable is the calculated bundle diameter of all its children. Cable children can be defined in the Connection List by:

  • Using the Connection Wizard to create children of the cable interactively.
  • By importing cable data from ECAD. When using the legacy import method, hierarchy is recreated by putting all wires with a populated cable_id box under the named cable or shield.

Cable length computation

The length of the longest wire in the cable reports as the cable length. Cut Length computes by applying the multiplier and an offset to this value.

Caveats

  • A check is not made to verify that the number of wires assigned to a cable in the connection list is not more than the number of wires (optionally) defined for the cable in the cable part table.
  • Wires route individually without regard to the cable to which they may belong. This can result in wires assigned to the same cable being routed on completely different paths (which is physically impossible).
