NX Electrical Routing: Official Blog Tips and Tricks (Practitioner Framing)

Siemens' own Designcenter blog publishes informal "tips and tricks" content that reads more like practitioner advice than formal help documentation — useful as a bridge between official docs and real-world usage. Key points from the Electrical Routing tips post:

Activate the application deliberately

Don't assume Routing Electrical tools are simply "on" once you're in the Routing environment — explicitly activate the electrical routing application first to make sure all the relevant navigators and tools are actually available in the session. (Consistent with the "enable Wire Harness" gotcha reported separately by Saratech and PLM Tech Talk — see routing-electrical-harness-formboard-tips.md in this knowledge base.)

Treat the Reuse Library as the default parts source

NX ships with a substantial set of electrical parts available immediately after install. The blog's advice is to lean on the Reuse Library's image/description-based search rather than trying to remember exact part numbers — search by visual/descriptive match first, confirm fit, then place.

Placement orientation is not automatic

When placing connectors or other electrical parts, cycle through the available placement/rotation options before committing — ports can be rotated to match your design intent, and the first placement solution NX offers is not guaranteed to be the orientation you want. Confirm orientation before hitting Apply rather than fixing it after the fact.

Spline Path for defining wiring runs

Define a wiring path by specifying points (typically port locations) using the Spline Path tool. NX will automatically compute the minimum required length along that path — useful as a first-pass length estimate before slack is added.

Add slack deliberately — don't design to the theoretical minimum

A specific, practical piece of advice: always add slack to harness designs rather than routing wires taut to their calculated minimum length. Real-world manufacturing and installation tolerances mean a harness built exactly to the CAD-calculated minimum length will be difficult or impossible to install without strain. This is presented as standard practice, not an edge case.

Reserve space early, even for undefined details

Use space reservation features to block out volume for electrical elements even before those elements are fully defined further downstream in the design process. This lets mechanical packaging proceed in parallel with electrical detail design without later discovering a conflict once the "real" harness geometry finally lands in the assembly.
