NX Tips and Tricks: Realize Shape Chamfer Cage and Transform Cage Commands

From the official Siemens NX Design blog (author Alex Discher, published July 8, 2025), covering two commands practitioners use constantly when sculpting subdivision bodies in Realize Shape.

Chamfer Cage

Applies a chamfer directly to the control cage rather than to the final smoothed surface. Key parameters:

  • Chamfer weight (%) — controls how much of the cage geometry is consumed by the chamfer.
  • Edge continuity — sharp or smooth — the same toggle covered in the companion "Chamfer Cage on Subdivision Bodies" post: smooth for organic blends, sharp for defined mechanical edges.

Working at the cage level (rather than post-hoc on the smoothed result) is the key workflow idea: you shape the low-poly control structure and let the subdivision surface update live, rather than trying to blend an already-smoothed surface.

Transform Cage

Lets a designer move, rotate, or scale selected cage elements — vertices, edges, faces, or whole sections — with several falloff options:

  • Multiple transformation methods for how the selection moves.
  • Falloff curve types: linear, convex, or concave — this determines how the transform blends into the surrounding, unselected geometry. Convex/concave falloffs are the practitioner's tool for avoiding hard "kinks" where a local edit meets untouched geometry.

This combination gives "rapid, precise, and dynamic control over the subdivision body" and is described as foundational to a flexible, intuitive Realize Shape workflow — i.e., experienced users lean on Chamfer Cage + Transform Cage together rather than reworking cage topology from scratch for every design iteration.
