Split cage faces with polylines to detail a design

This example shows how to split cage faces with polylines in the process of creating a handle shape.

Splitting faces produces more faces, edges, and vertices which then can be used to build more detail into your design

1. Choose Home tab→Modify group→Split Face .

2. From the Type list, choose Uniform.

3. Select the four horizontal faces of the transformed sphere.

4. Middle-click to advance and then select the reference edge, as shown.

5. In the Split group, in the Number box, key in 3 and press Enter.

6. Click Apply.

You need to apply your changes, because you are going to split along a polyline next.

Split Face is still active.

7. In the Split Face dialog box, from the Type list, choose Along Polyline.

8. With Select Points active, select the two points, as shown.

9. Middle-click to create the split along the polyline.

10. Select the corresponding points on the other end.

11. Choose Home tab→Create group→Extrude Cage .

12. Select the two split faces as shown.

13. Drag the Distance handle to an appropriate position.

14. Middle-click to complete.

The handle is ready for subsequent operations such as Set Continuity and Set Weight to further detail the design
