Point Set options

Type

Lets you specify the type of Point Set feature you want to create:

  • Curve Points — Creates a set of points along an existing curve.
  • Spline Points — Creates a set of points at the knots, poles, or defining points of the spline.
  • Face Points — Creates a set of points on an existing face. Points are created on the entire face, regardless of how it is trimmed.
  • Intersection Points — Creates a set of intersection points as a feature. Can be used in conjunction with Isolate Object of Feature.

Subtype

Curve Points by (appears when Type = Curve Points)

Defines the spacing of the points along the curve:

  • Equal Arc Length — Spaces the points at equal distances along the path of the curve.
  • Equal Parameters — Spaces the points based on the characteristics/parameters of the curve. Tight curves can cause tighter spacing; straighter sections allow wider spacing.
  • Geometric Progression — Spaces the points based on a geometric ratio. Example: Number of points = 5, Start Percentage = 0, End Percentage = 100, Ratio = 0.75 → Distance A; Distance B = A × Ratio; Distance C = B × Ratio; Distance D = C × Ratio.
  • Chordal Tolerance — Spaces the points based on a chordal tolerance (the maximum distance between the parent curve and the straight line/chord between two adjacent points). Points are created from the curve start to the curve end.
  • Incremental Arc Length — Lets you enter a path length between points. The arc length distance must be ≤ the length of the selected curve and > zero. The total number of points and partial (leftover) arc length are calculated based on the entered arc length and the curve's total arc length.
  • Projectioning Points — Projects the selected point to the specified curve and creates a point there. If the projected point doesn't fall on the curve, a point is created at the nearest end of the curve. Multiple curves selected → a point on each curve; multiple points selected → each is projected. Multiple points projecting to the same location create overlapping points.
  • Curve Percentage — Creates a point on each curve at the distance representing the specified percentage. E.g., selecting three curves with 10% creates points at 10% of each curve's length individually (not the total length of all curves combined). Point location is based on the curve's parametric orientation — review point locations if curves are not oriented end to end.

Spline Point Type (appears when Type = Spline Points)

  • Defining Points — Creates points at the defining points of a spline. The spline must be a through-points spline; By Poles splines do not have defining points.
  • Knots — Creates points at the knot points of an existing spline (the endpoints of each spline segment). A single-segment spline (e.g., Bezier splines) has only two knot points. You can create point sets on multiple splines; each selection creates points at that spline's knot points.
  • Poles — Creates points at the poles of any spline, including endpoints. Useful for creating an adjoining spline while maintaining slope continuity where the two curves join.

Face Points by (appears when Type = Face Points)

  • Pattern — Creates points on the entire face, regardless of trimming, using U direction / V direction parameters.
  • Face Percentage — Adds a point on one or more faces at specified U and V percentage values (e.g., U=0%,V=0%; U=20%,V=20%; U=60%,V=60%).
  • B-Surface Poles — Creates points at the poles of any face, including edge points, useful for creating adjoining sheet bodies while maintaining slope continuity of the underlying B-Surface.

Curve, Face or Plane / Curve (Intersection Points)

  • Select Object — Appears when Type = Intersection Points. Lets you select curves, faces, or planes to intersect with curves selected in the Curve group.
  • Select Curve — Appears when Type = Intersection Points. Lets you select the curves to intersect with the objects selected in the Curve, Face, or Plane group.

Base Geometry

  • Select Curve or Edge — Appears when Type = Curve Points.
  • Select Spline — Appears when Type = Spline Points.
  • Select Face — Appears when Type = Face Points.

Definitions (group name depends on point set type)

Appears when Type = Curve Points:

  • Number of Points — Appears for Equal Arc Length, Equal Parameters, or Geometric Progression. Specifies the number of points to create.
  • Start Percentage / Select Object for Start Percentage — Specifies the start location as a percentage of curve length. Optionally select a cursor location, existing point, control point, or curve to calculate the start percentage. If a curve is selected and doesn't intersect the base curve, the intersection is determined via extensions — the Point Set feature may end at a location not on the base curve (percentage can be negative).
  • End Percentage / Select Object for End Percentage — Same as above but for the end location (percentage can exceed 100%).
  • Ratio — Appears for Geometric Progression. Specifies the geometric ratio for point spacing.
  • Chordal Tolerance — Appears for Chordal Tolerance. Specifies the tolerance value.
  • Arc Length — Appears for Incremental Arc Length. Specifies the arc length value.
  • Specify Point — Appears for Projecting Points. Lets you specify the projection points.
  • Add New Set — Appears for Curve Points w/ Projecting Points or Curve Percentage, or Face Points w/ Face Percentage. Adds a new set of projection points/percentage values.

Parameters (appears when Type = Face Points)

Specifies the number of points in the U and V direction (Pattern subtype), or the U and V percentage (Face Percentage subtype).

List (appears for Curve Points w/ Projecting Points or Curve Percentage, or Face Points w/ Face Percentage)

Lists all selected projection points (Curve Points) or all defined percentage values (Face Points). You can add a new set as required.

Pattern Limits (appears when Type = Face Points, Face Points by = Pattern)

  • Diagonal Points — Lets you define the two points used to determine the parametric bounds.
  • Percentages — Lets you define the start and stop positions of the rows of points as a percentage of the path lengths the underlying surface occupies in the U and V directions (e.g., Starting V = 10%, Ending V = 75%, Starting U = 15%, Ending U = 95%).

Settings

  • Associative — Select this check box to create an associative Point Set feature.
  • Distance Tolerance — Specifies a value for the distance tolerance.
  • Angle Tolerance — Specifies a value for the angle tolerance.
