Rib
Use the Rib command to add a thin-wall rib or rib network to a solid body by extruding an intersecting planar section.
Ribs are created based on a planar section of curves. The section can be any combination of curves:
| A single open curve with no other curves’ endpoint connected. A single closed curve or spline. Connected curves may be open or closed. Y-junctions. |

You can specify a wall direction where the rib walls are perpendicular to the section plane or parallel to it.

You can specify how thickness is applied relative to the section.
- Symmetric — Rib thickness is applied symmetrically about the section curves.
- Asymmetric — Rib thickness is applied to one side of the section curves.
Why should I use it?
Ribs are common in molded, cast, and forged parts and have numerous industrial applications.

Create internal ribs for a plastic cover
This example shows how to create internal stiffening ribs.
- Open and closed rib features.
- A network of ribs in one feature.
- Rib feature reordering.
Choose Home tab→Base group→Rib .
In this example, there is only one solid body in the part so the body is preselected.
Select curves for the first rib section.
For this example, a small circle is selected to create a boss.
The initial rib displays along with handles to specify offset and thickness.
Drag the Thickness handle to specify the thickness or enter a value in the Thickness box.
Click Apply.
The solid is still selected.
Select curves for another rib section.
For this example, a pattern of curves is selected to create a network of ribs.
The ribs radiate outward from their ends until they intersect another solid body.
Drag the Thickness and Offset handles as necessary to configure the ribs.
In this example, the ribs are offset to a lower level.
Click Apply.
Select curves for another rib section.
In this example, a rib section is created to connect opposing walls of the cover and the Offset handle is used to lower the rib.
Click OK.
Reorder rib features in the Part Navigator, if necessary.
In this example, the last rib feature is reordered before the Y-juncture network rib feature.
Hide or suppress any construction geometry.

Dimension
Determines how thickness is applied relative to the section.

| Offsets the rib thickness symmetric about the section curves. | Available only when the section is a single curve. Offsets the rib thickness to one side of the section curve. |
Thickness
A dimensional value for the rib thickness.
When Dimension is set to Symmetric:
- The thickness changes symmetrically about the stationary section.
- A thickness handle is available on both ends of the dimension line.
When Dimension is set to Asymmetric:
- The thickness changes in one direction from the stationary side.
- An thickness handle is available on the motion side of the dimension, opposite the stationary side.
Combine Rib with Target
When the check box is selected, the feature is united with the target body.
This option can be modified during edit.
Cap
Available only when the rib wall direction is perpendicular to the section plane.
Geometry list
Defines the geometry of the rib cap.
Caps the rib with a planar face parallel to the section plane.
Available when wall direction is perpendicular to the section plane.
Caps the rib with a selected face chain or datum plane.
Available only if the wall direction is perpendicular.
Offset
Offset behavior depends on the Geometry setting:
The rib cap is a planar face, parallel to the section plane.
- Value is greater than or equal to 0, and can be on either side of zero.
- If value equals 0, the cap is coplanar to the section plane.
- If value is greater than 0, the cap is offset from the section plane.
The rib cap is a selected face chain or datum.
- Only one datum plane can be selected.
- A selected face chain must be one connected chain of faces.
- Value is greater than or equal to 0, and can be on either side of zero
- If value equals 0, the cap is coincident to the selected face chain.
- If value is greater than 0, the cap is offset from the selected face chain.
Draft
Available only when the rib wall direction is perpendicular to the section plane.
Draft
Applies a draft angle to rib walls.
- Drafts rib walls with the rib cap stationary.
- Draft direction is opposite the rib.
Angle
Available only when Draft is From Cap.
Sets the angle of the draft. Input value must be between 0 and 89.
